Glen Elgin – 18 Year Old Special Release 2017

This is the 2017 Special Release of Glen Elgin, aged 18 years, in an edition of 5352 bottles. It began as a yeast experiment: the distillery used both conventional cerevisiae yeast and pombe yeast, a strain from East Africa that is unusual in whisky. The whisky is a vatting of two batches. One part, made with pombe yeast, was matured in ex-bodega sherry casks; the other, made with standard yeast, in refill European oak butts. The nose is deep and fruity, with green and baked apples and fresh bread with butter and floral honey. The palate is creamy and full-bodied, with ripe banana, honey melon and bitter orange. The finish is medium to long, fruity and creamy.
