Scarabus is an Islay single malt from Hunter Laing & Co., bottled at 46% in a 70cl bottle without colouring or chill-filtration. The name belongs to an area of Islay regarded as mystical. It dates back to the 13th century and means a rocky place in Old Norse. The packaging draws on John Francis Campbell, born on Islay, who invented the sunshine recorder and gathered a large collection of Celtic folk tales. Peat smoke and sea salt lead the nose. The palate brings warming leather, stewed rhubarb and vanilla sweetness, followed by a rich, lingering finish.
