Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique is a single cask single malt from the King Car Distillery in Yilan County, Taiwan, which opened in 2005. It is bottled at natural cask strength, here 59.4% abv.
The whisky was matured in American oak wine barrels that previously held red and white wines, treated with the STR (shave, toast, re-char) method developed by the late Dr Jim Swan. The colour is a deep autumn gold with a reddish mahogany hue.
The nose brings caramelised sugar, dark chocolate and sticky berry fruit, with ripe mango, melon and kiwi. The palate is viscous, with vanilla fudge, espresso, stewed plums, pepper and toasted oak. The long finish carries salted dark chocolate, walnut and a vinous dryness.
