A Lagavulin matured for eight years entirely in refill American oak casks and bottled at 48% without chill filtration, in a 70cl bottle.
It first appeared in 2016 for the distillery's 200th anniversary and joined the permanent range in 2017. The age echoes Alfred Barnard, the Victorian whisky writer, who admired an eight-year-old Lagavulin on a visit in the late 1880s.
The nose is soft and fresh, with milk chocolate, lemon, tea-like smoke and maritime dryness. The palate turns from oily sweetness to smoke, mint and dark chocolate, and the very long finish carries gentle mint smoke.
