Lunar Crater: Balboa is a 13-year-old Speyside single malt in the Scotch Universe range, bottled at 52.4% ABV in a 70cl bottle. The distillery behind it was founded in 1821.
The whisky was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2022, having spent its whole maturation in a first fill Rioja wine barrique.
The nose is dry red wine and oak with redcurrant and starfruit, growing sweeter with cherry and strawberry. The palate is smooth and fruity, with blackberry, black cherry and dark redcurrant, and milk chocolate towards the end. The finish is medium in length, with light tannins from the wine cask.
