Mars Shinshu Iwai is a Japanese blended whisky from the Mars Shinshu Distillery in Nagano Prefecture. It is named in tribute to Kiichiro Iwai, who designed the distillery's original pot stills. The blend is about 75% corn and 25% malted barley, inspired by American whiskies, and it is bottled at 40% ABV in a 75cl bottle.
Ex-bourbon barrels give it a sweet base of caramel and toasted oak.
The nose is lean and sweet, with vanilla, corn, light wood smoke, honey and apricot. The palate is light and smooth, with pear, quince and buttery toffee. The finish is crisp and clean, with ginger and lingering sweetness.
