Komagatake 2023 is an annual bottling from Mars Shinshu, made by Hombo Shuzo in Japan. It marries malt whiskies from ex-bourbon, sherry and port casks, along with other cask types, and was released in 2023 in an outturn of 51,642 bottles. It is bottled at 50%, without chill-filtration or added colour.
The nose brings apricot, orange peel and banana, then black tea, with vanilla and milk chocolate. On the palate dried plum comes first, followed by hazelnut, maple syrup and ripe peach, then persimmon, berries, vanilla, and a fresh, slightly bitter note of grapefruit and chocolate. The finish is round and sweet, with a hint of baked sweets, a light roasted note and a fine bitterness.
