A 17 year old Mortlach from 1995, bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society as a single cask under the code 76.97. It was matured in a refill sherry butt, which gave 572 bottles in a 70cl bottle.
Mortlach is known for the most complex distillation regime in Scotland.
The nose begins with Mediterranean herbs, gorse, heather, pine cones, moss and mushrooms, turning sweeter with golden syrup, lemon cake and ripe pineapple. The palate is viscous and sweet, like melted milk chocolate, with nuts and vanilla, and the finish is long with salted, peppered cashews. With water it moves towards orange chocolate, caramelised banana and ginger biscuits, ending in a s'more.
