Mortlach Special Release 2022 is a single malt Scotch whisky at 57.8% vol, in a 70cl bottle. It belongs to the 2022 Special Releases, a yearly collection inspired by the creatures of Scottish myth, and carries the nickname 'the Beast of Dufftown'.
Mortlach is usually associated with sherry-matured whisky, but this release was matured in virgin oak, tawny port and red muscat wine casks. The colour is shimmering gold with ruby highlights.
The nose is rich, with grapes and red wine, sweet sponge, tart berries and stewed apple. The palate is weighty and fruity, with creamy chocolate and caramel, and the finish is slightly dry.
