Mortlach Special Release 2023, called The Katana's Edge, is a Speyside single malt from the Diageo Special Releases collection. It is bottled at 58% in a 70cl bottle.
It was matured in Kanosuke Japanese whisky casks and Pinot Noir casks, and was inspired by the flavours of Japan.
The nose sets tropical fruit against cured meat, clove, red chili, earth and black pepper. The palate shows pear, toffee, orange peel and marzipan, with umami notes, chocolate, nuts, liquorice, rhubarb and a little pepper. The finish is rich, with honey and pepper, then red fruit, chocolate, pencil shavings and balsamic notes.
