Nikka Yoichi Single Malt (70cl)

This is a single malt from the Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido, Nikka's first distillery, built in 1934. Founder Masataka Taketsuru chose the site because its conditions resemble those of Scotland. Peat plays a part in its character. Local peat was originally used to dry the malted barley, though much of the peated barley used today is imported from Scotland. The distillery's closeness to the sea adds a salty, smoky note. The nose is rich and velvety, with gentle peat building into smoke, ash and brine, then candied citrus, black liquorice and spice. The palate is robust, with peat, smoke, spices, fresh fruit and nuts, and a little chocolate mid-palate. The finish is long and mature.
