Nikka Single Malt Yoichi is a no age statement single malt from the Yoichi Distillery on Hokkaido, built in 1934 by Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru. It was released as a permanent bottling in 2016 and is bottled at 45% in a 750ml bottle.
Yoichi uses direct coal fired pot stills. The whisky is made from malted barley, vats together various Yoichi malts and is matured in new American oak and sherry casks, with sea air off Ishikari Bay during ageing.
The nose is bold peat smoke and sea brine with candied citrus peel, nutmeg, dried fruit and honeyed malt. The palate is rich and lightly oily, with smoky peat, orchard fruit, salted caramel, coffee and walnut. The finish is long, with smoke, leather and tropical fruit.
