Old Forester Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whisky, the first from the Louisville brand, launched in 2019. Its recipe is inspired by Normandy Rye, a brand Brown-Forman acquired in 1940, and it was the first new mash bill for Old Forester in nearly 150 years.
The mash bill is 65% rye, 20% malted barley and 15% corn, matured in new charred oak and bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof). The high share of malted barley allows a fully natural fermentation and adds a floral, malty character alongside the peppery rye spice.
The nose is floral, with brown sugar, citrus zest, mint, soft pine and black pepper. On the palate come cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, baked bread and banana, with a touch of chocolate and citrus. The finish is warm, spicy and medium in length.
