Port Askaig 45 Year Old is an unpeated Islay single malt from the Port Askaig range of Elixir Distillers, bottled at 40.8% in a 70cl bottle. The whisky was distilled in the 1960s and matured for 45 years.
Five refill sherry butts formed the base. For the final year the whisky from them was combined and divided among three sherry butts. It is non-chill-filtered and has no added colour.
The nose opens with camphor and menthol, followed by malt, oak and sweet tropical fruit with ripe apples and pears. The palate is full and creamy, with sugary sweetness, citrus and a pinch of salt. The finish is very long and lightly fruity, with soft oak and, late on, cut grass, mint and basil.
