Port Askaig 8 Year Old is a smoky Islay single malt put together by master blender Oliver Chilton. The whisky spends its first three years in American oak, then at least five more in a mix of bourbon barrels, toasted American oak barrels, PX sherry butts and refill hogsheads.
It is bottled at 45.8% ABV, non-chill-filtered and without added colour.
The nose offers charcoal smoke, lemon oil and pine with gingerbread, dark chocolate and toasted vanilla. On the palate come heather honey, toasted grain bread, lemon bitterness and grilled grapefruit, with ginger biscuits for sweetness. The finish moves from dark chocolate and pickled ginger to melon and air-dried ham, ending in warm chilli spice.
