Royal Lochnagar – 1981 Prima & Ultima Third Release

A very small batch of Royal Lochnagar from 1981, released in the third instalment of the Prima & Ultima series and selected by Dr Craig Wilson. It comes from an experiment to capture the angels' share, the whisky lost from the cask through evaporation. When the experiment ended, a little of the liquid was moved into the present casks, where it rested into its fifth decade. The nose is mellow with a light prickle, with honeysuckle, rose and bramble. The palate is smooth, creamy and mouth-filling, sweet and slightly waxy, starting oaky and spicy before turning drying with growing warmth. The finish is long, warming and spicy.
