A Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve from the 1990s, in a 70cl bottle at 43% ABV. The distillery stands near Balmoral in Deeside and is run by a staff of only eight. It carries no age statement because each cask is tasted many times before it is judged ready for bottling. The colour is dark pink gold.
The nose offers dried figs, cigar smoke, honey, leather polish and plenty of tangerine, as marmalade, syrup and fresh juice. The palate is meaty, sooty and ashy, with more tangerine, old dried fruits, honey and mead. The finish is long, with Spanish ham, mead and figs, and a grassier, drier aftertaste.
