Safe Haven is an eight-year-old smoky single malt from Murray McDavid's Autumn 2023 Mystery Malt series. It was distilled in 2014, bottled in 2023 at 50% and comes in a 70cl bottle.
The whisky matured in a bourbon hogshead, then spent its final two years in first-fill Saint-Julien-Beychevelle wine casks from Bordeaux. It is bottled without chill filtration or added colour, and 1,857 bottles were filled.
The nose combines smoke and red berries with a salty sea breeze and fresh malt. The palate is powerful and oily, with fresh peat smoke, ripe cherries and juicy cured meat. Sweet fruit and gentle smoke linger in the finish, which ends pleasantly dry.
