A limited edition from Venezuelan house Santa Teresa, this is the 1796 solera-style rum finished in oak casks seasoned with Chuao cacao. It starts from the 1796 base, with rums aged for up to 35 years in oak, and is bottled at 43% ABV.
No chocolate is added. The cacao character comes only from the seasoned wood.
The nose offers dark chocolate, espresso, dried fig and toasted oak over ripe tropical fruit and caramel. The palate is silky, with roasted cacao nibs, black cherry, molasses and butterscotch, plus spice, vanilla and a little tobacco leaf. The finish is long and warm, with cocoa bitterness and dried fruit.
