The Legendary Red Silkie is a blended Irish whiskey from Sliabh Liag Distillers in County Donegal, bottled at 46% and non-chill filtered. It combines peated malt with grain whiskey, drawn from both double and triple distilled spirit, and is finished in Spanish red wine casks from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
The name honours Red Hugh O'Donnell, Lord of Tyrconnell, who sailed to Spain in 1602 to seek the support of King Philip III and died there.
The nose has strawberry and blackcurrant with cooked fruit behind and a vegetal peat smoke that grows in the glass. On the palate are toasted sugar, warm barley and sweet strawberry, then drying oak tannin and smoke. The finish carries cooked summer fruit.
