A 9 year old Smögen from the 2012 vintage, matured in a third fill barrel and bottled at 57.1%, which is 100 proof, after a modest reduction. It is Whisky Sponge Edition No.41.
The release follows the first Smögen cask bottled by Whisky Sponge, Edition 19. The barrel chosen was a well-used, inactive one, which leaves the distillate in front: raw peat smoke, seawater and citrus, in a farmy, coastal style.
The nose offers brackish water, damp smoke, bell peppers and wet hay. On the palate come pickle juice, chalk, brine and wood smoke, then lemon and lime. The finish is long, with medicinal coastal smoke, cooling mint and a touch of baked sweetness.
