Smokehead Rum Cask Rebel (70cl, 46%)

A peated Islay single malt from Smokehead, a brand of Ian Macleod Distillers, finished in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. It is bottled at 46% without chill-filtration, in a 70cl bottle, and appears in limited yearly releases. After several years in a range of bourbon casks, the whisky spent nine to twelve months in ex-rum casks. The aim is a contrast of smoke and salt with fruity sweetness. The nose opens with strong peat smoke, then burnt marshmallow, toasted pineapple and banana, with grilled bacon. The palate is oily and salty, with intense smoke softened quickly by honey and lemon. The finish is toasted oak with smoky embers and a faint touch of fruit.
