Speyside Distillery – 28 Year Old 1994 Single Bourbon Hogshead #52 (70cl, 55%)

This is a 28 year old single malt from the Speyside Distillery, distilled in 1994 and matured in a single bourbon hogshead. It was bottled at 55% ABV by the independent bottler Limited Whisky, and the cask gave 173 bottles. At this age most of the flavour comes from the cask, and this one proved more complex than the clean, delicate style typical of the distillery would suggest. The distillery stands near Kingussie and runs a pair of stills that were first installed at Lochside. The nose is fruity, with plums, strawberries, raspberries and peaches, plus cinnamon. The palate is rich and creamy, with ginger, turmeric, liquorice and coffee beans, and the finish is long and spicy.
