This is an Irish single pot still whiskey from Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin, matured entirely in virgin Portuguese oak casks and bottled at 50% ABV in a 70cl bottle.
Portuguese oak is not a traditional cask-making wood, and it carries noticeably more tannin than the American or European oak usually used. Teeling chose it to see how that tannic wood would work with pot still distillate. The mashbill is half malted and half unmalted barley, triple distilled.
The nose brings dark toffee, Nutella, cacao and leather, with clove and hot pepper. On the palate come chocolate, Brazil nut and baked citrus, then black pepper, nutmeg and fig. The finish is long and warming, with tobacco, salt and toasted oak.
