A three-year-old single malt from Basque Moonshiners, a micro-distillery in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Spanish Basque Country. The Pioneer Edition matures in ex-bourbon barrels and red wine casks from Rioja Alavesa. It is made from Pilsner and Munich malt from Navarre and distilled twice.
Bottled at 46% in a 70cl bottle, without chill-filtering or added colour, it comes in a tube. The name recalls the Agotes, a community marginalised for centuries in the Pyrenees, and the label and tube draw on that history.
The nose combines grapes and peach with creamy vanilla and caramel, cocoa and a little clove. The palate is full, with vanilla, ripe banana, cinnamon and nutmeg, and the medium finish is fruity and winey with soft caramel.
