This is a Kentucky-bottled rye whiskey from Angel's Envy, finished in Caribbean rum casks and bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof). It was among the first American ryes finished in rum casks when it launched in 2013.
The mashbill is 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The rye was distilled at MGP in Indiana and aged for around six to seven years in new charred American oak. It then spent up to 18 months in Caribbean rum casks that had earlier held French cognac. Each small batch is blended from 8 to 12 barrels.
The nose has citrus zest, caramel candy, maple sugar, vanilla and baking spice. The palate is rich and sweet, with rum-soaked fruit, molasses and gingerbread over spicy rye. The finish is long, with cinnamon, allspice and a hint of tobacco.
