This is Ardbeg Ten Years Old, an Islay single malt bottled at 46% in a 70cl bottle. It was named World Whisky of the Year in 2008.
It is peaty and smoky, yet the peat gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt. The nose combines smoky fruit, lemon and lime, dark chocolate, menthol, black pepper and tar, with smoked fish, bacon and baked pineapple. The palate is peppery and peaty, with toffee, brine, ripe banana and currants, then espresso, liquorice and tarry smoke. The finish is long and smoky, with espresso, aniseed, toasted almonds and a little fresh pear.
