Ardbeg Twenty One The Ultimate is a limited edition 21 year old Islay single malt, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 46% without chill-filtration. It was unveiled in the second half of 2016 and was said to mark the turbulent times the distillery went through in the 1990s.
The nose combines tarry smoke, Ardbeg ice cream and black pepper, with green herbal notes of fennel or basil. Water brings out toffee, popcorn and buttery oak. The palate is peppery and fizzy, with liquorice, aniseed, marzipan, toasted rye bread, charcoal and peppermint. The finish is long and gentle, with coal tar, aniseed and smoky butter.
