Balcones Cataleja is a Texas single malt from Balcones Distilling of Waco, released in November 2023 as a limited edition for the distillery's 15th anniversary. It is bottled at 59% in a 750ml bottle.
It is made from 100% Golden Promise malted barley. The first three years were in ex-Kentucky bourbon barrels, before the whisky moved into decommissioned sherry solera puncheons over 80 years old (Moscatel, Amontillado Dulce, Oloroso and Palo Cortado), with two more refill rounds. The name Cataleja loosely translates as 'spyglass'.
On the nose it is bright yet earthy, with brandied figs, smoked paprika and sauteed apricots. The palate is sticky, with medjool dates, cashew butter, cacao nib and ground clove.
