This is Mirador, a Texas single malt from Balcones, bottled at 53% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It is made from Golden Promise barley malt and matured in previously used oak casks, which give a softer wood influence and leave room for fruity and herbal notes. It is not chill-filtered or coloured.
Balcones was founded in Waco in 2008 and distils in copper pot stills from Forsyths of Scotland.
The nose starts with unripe pear, green apple peel and plant stems, then honeysuckle, fallen leaves, honey, brown sugar and soft suede. The palate brings green fruit, green tea and honey, with fennel and lemongrass; with time it turns to apple pie with lemon cream. The finish is citrus-lifted, turning drier with sandalwood and marmalade, and ends on Earl Grey.
