Basil Hayden's Golden Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey, bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. It is made at the James B. Beam Distillery in Clermont from a mashbill of 100% malted rye, column-distilled and aged in new charred American oak barrels.
Malting the rye softens the grain's spiciness, so this is a gentler style of rye than the peppery norm.
The nose is light honey, dried herbs, peppery rye and a faint floral sweetness. The palate starts with vanilla and cinnamon, then moves to black tea, chai-like warmth, baking spice and toasted rye bread. The finish is medium, with peanut brittle and nougatine.
