Port Charlotte 18 Years is a heavily peated single malt from Bruichladdich on Islay, released as a limited edition at 51.5% ABV. It was distilled in 2005 from 100% Scottish barley and has a phenol level of 40ppm.
The vatting is made up of 53% bourbon casks, 31% sherry casks and 16% whisky that spent 11 years in sherry casks and about five in new French oak, before all of it was moved into second-fill bourbon casks.
The nose offers figs, sultanas and raisins with sweet smoke, then charred oak, tobacco and heather. The palate brings brown sugar, apricot jam and heather honey, with barbecue smoke, creme brulee, hazelnut and toasted coconut. The finish carries wood spices, smoked leather and a salty nuttiness.
