This is a 12-year-old Islay single malt from Caol Ila, distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2020 by Wilson & Morgan at 48%. It spent a final 10 months in a virgin oak cask.
The finish softens the smoky, medicinal side of the malt and gives a fuller, creamier mouthfeel, while the sooty, ashy Islay character remains, in a more muscular form. The oak is not especially tannic or heavy.
Vanilla, toffee and butterscotch stand out, with liquorice and a hint of sweetened coffee. The peaty aromas grow quickly in the glass.
