This is a Caol Ila single malt from Islay, distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2020 by Wilson & Morgan at 25 years old and 59.8% ABV. It comes in a 70cl bottle.
The whisky is peated and was matured fully in sherry casks, a pairing of smoke and wine that is not easy to get right. A second fill cask was used to stop the sherry overwhelming the peated malt, and the result has a character of its own.
The nose is dark, leathery and oaky, with slightly musty notes. On the palate it is dry, nutty and tarry, with mint, camphor, eucalyptus and unsweetened liquorice, lifted by orange peel. A little water helps it open up.
