This is a 31-year-old Caol Ila from Islay, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail in its Connoisseurs Choice range. The whisky was distilled on 30 September 1991, matured in a refill sherry butt and bottled on 30 November 2022 at 55.5% ABV. The single cask gave 432 bottles.
It is non-chill-filtered and has no added colour. The character is smoky, with savoury notes alongside fruity sweetness and spice, while citrus peel and charred oak add contrast.
The nose brings smoked meat, cinnamon and brown sugar with orange peel, spiced apple and raspberry jam. Sweet smoke meets white pepper on the palate, and the finish is long and full, with walnut.
