This is a single cask Islay single malt from Ardbeg, released as Dramfool's Gold: Red Bag, at 20 years old and 56.5%.
It matured for more than 17 years in ex-bourbon casks, then spent six months in a port barrique before a two-year finish in a first-fill Oloroso sherry hogshead. The sherry finish added depth and flavour without overpowering the spirit.
The nose offers sherry, red and dark fruit, smoked bacon crisps, seaweed and salty sea air. On the palate come layers of dark fruit, smouldering peat and smoked bacon crisps, with the feel of a distant seaside barbecue. The finish lingers.
