Duke Grand Cru Founder's Reserve is a nine year old Kentucky straight bourbon from Duke Spirits, the whiskey brand of the John Wayne family, made to the original 1962 recipe. After maturing in new charred American oak it was finished in single-use French oak barrels that previously held California Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Taransaud and Demptos cooperages. Each barrel is bottled individually, at 110 proof (55%).
It pours a deep reddish amber. The nose is nutmeg and buttered pecan with stone fruit, oak and a hint of cherry. The palate is smooth and rich, with butterscotch and stone fruit over cedar and black cherry dipped in milk chocolate. The long finish carries cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.
