Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel is a small batch Kentucky straight bourbon from Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, bottled at 47% in a 75cl bottle. The mash bill is 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley.
After its first maturation in new charred oak, the bourbon is finished in a second barrel of toasted, not charred, new American oak. Toasting brings out caramelised wood sugars and spice rather than the sharper tannin of charred wood.
The nose offers caramel and vanilla with cinnamon, clove and caramelised wood sugar. The palate is smooth and full-bodied, with sweet spice, and the finish is long, warm and spicy.
