This is a cask strength Japanese whisky from the Karuizawa distillery, drawn from the 1999 and 2000 vintages and bottled at 59.2% ABV in a 70cl bottle.
Sherry influence shows on the nose, with raisins, cherry jam and candied plums beneath creamy nuts, hazelnuts, peanuts and coconut, plus dark chocolate, cocoa powder and sticky toffee.
The palate is dense, oily and chewy, with baked apples and cinnamon, ginger in syrup and cured wood, then old leather, old books and a bitter chocolate note against apricot sweetness. The finish is very long and warm, with ginger, malt and a dry, rancio-like hint of old wooden furniture.
