Karuizawa 52 Year Old comes from a sherry hogshead filled at the Karuizawa distillery in Japan, which its owners Mercian closed in 2001. The whisky was distilled on 1 February 1960 and bottled on 1 January 2013 at 51.8% ABV, after 52 years in cask.
It is the oldest whisky Karuizawa ever produced and was, at the time, the oldest Japanese whisky ever bottled. The cask was among the last handful laid down at the distillery, and the bottling was made by independent bottler Number One Drinks Company.
