Kavalan Ex-Bourbon Oak is a Taiwanese single malt from Kavalan Distillery in Yilan County, bottled at 46% in a 750ml bottle. It is non-chill filtered.
The malt is made from barley imported from Scotland and matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks. Taiwan's hot, humid climate pushes the angel's share as high as 15% a year, compared with roughly 2% in Scotland, so three to five years in Yilan can build considerable complexity.
The nose offers candied lime, mango, vanilla and toasted coconut. The palate is soft, with mango, pineapple and tangerine, then oak spice. The finish is long, with pineapple, apricot and baking spice.
