A 20-year-old Japanese single malt from Mars, the Vintage Satsuma, distilled in 1984 and matured in three sherry casks. It is bottled at 55% ABV in a 72cl bottle.
It was distilled at the old Kagoshima distillery, now called Tsunuki, before Mars moved to Shinsu. Casks of this kind are said to have served as the foundation for The Malt of Kagoshima, and leftovers from the bottling were released several years later as Lost Butterfly.
The nose is fragrant and vegetative, with sour apples and perfume. The palate is dry and well bodied, with black pepper, sour fruit and smoke. The finish is dry, medium and slightly smoky, with a wet steamed lotus leaf note.
