Michter's US*1 Small Batch Sour Mash is an American whisky bottled at 86 proof (43%). Its grain mix is neither bourbon nor rye, and it includes corn, rye and malted barley. It was reintroduced in 2012 as part of the US*1 line.
It is made as a sour mash, with part of an earlier fermented mash used to start the next, and aged in charred new American white oak barrels.
The nose offers burnt sugar, candied cherries, honeyed vanilla and cinnamon. The palate is silky and sweet, with caramel, toffee, coffee cake and stone fruit. The finish is clean, with mild heat and lingering rye spice and black pepper.
