Michter's US1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash is a small batch American whiskey distilled in Kentucky and bottled at 43% in a 70cl bottle. It is chill-filtered.
It matures first in new charred American white oak, then spends more time in a second barrel made specially from wood air-dried for 18 months, toasted but not charred. Master Distiller Dan McKee, Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson and their team tried a range of toasting levels for it.
The nose is pencil shavings and heavily toasted oak with black cherries, overripe plums and the dusty smell of old bookshops. The palate brings dark fruit, red vermouth, blackcurrant jam and vanilla pods, and the finish is floral with violet, rosewater and long clove spice.
