New Riff Balboa Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey made from Balboa, a heirloom rye variety popular in the 1940s that had nearly disappeared. The Fogg Family Farm in Indiana grows it exclusively for New Riff. The mashbill is 95% Balboa rye and 5% malted rye, distilled in Newport, Kentucky, and first released in 2019.
It was aged for at least 4 years in 53 gallon toasted and charred new oak barrels, then bottled in bond at 50% (100 proof) without chill filtration, in a 750ml bottle.
The nose has ripe oak, waxy honeyed fruit, red fruits, clove, rye bread and black and white pepper. The palate is rounded and full bodied, and the finish is long.
