Nikka Miyagikyo is a Japanese single malt from Nikka, the company founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who travelled to Scotland in 1918 to learn the craft of whisky-making.
The nose opens with iris, then malted barley, banana, liquorice and camphor, with burnt wood and ash, and later white flowers and beeswax. The palate is built on malted barley with liquorice, ginger, cinnamon and chocolate, and fresh tobacco leaf and coconut towards the close. The finish is long and soft, with a tang of lemon and grapefruit, tobacco, cardamom, toasted nuts and stewed apple and damson.
