Octomore 14.2, called The Impossible Equation, is a five-year-old Islay single malt bottled at 57.7% in a 70cl bottle. It is made from 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley peated to 128.9 ppm. Head Distiller Adam Hannett matured it in a mix of sherry and wine casks, choosing former Oloroso and Amarone casks, then completed the maturation in French oak. The nutty sweetness of those casks is set against the strong peat smoke. The nose brings leather, plums, redcurrants and barley malt with toasted oak, cinnamon, green apple and black pepper. On the palate it is dry and spicy with toasted oak and roasted coffee beans, before fruit cake and dried fruit appear. The finish is smoked malt, glowing charcoal, sea salt and earthy smoke.
