Opus One 2017 is a Bordeaux-style red blend from estate vineyards in Oakville, Napa Valley. The estate began as a partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild.
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon at around 81 per cent, with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a touch of Malbec. Maceration lasted twenty days, and more than half of the fermentation used native yeast. A wet winter, a warm summer and favourable August conditions led to an early harvest, beginning on 5 September.
The nose offers baked black cherry, mulberry, cassis, spice cake, licorice and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied and lively, with juicy raspberry and cassis, plush fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long and graceful.
