Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15 Year Old is a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon, aged for 15 years and bottled at 107 proof (53.5% ABV). It is made at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky, as all Van Winkle bourbons have been since Julian Van Winkle III partnered with the distillery in 2002. The recipe traces back to Julian 'Pappy' Van Winkle Sr. and his wheated mashbill at Stitzel-Weller in Louisville, with wheat taking the place of rye as the secondary grain. The nose has caramel, vanilla, dried apricot and light oak spice. The palate is rich and full, with toffee, leather, dried cherry and baking spice. The finish is long, with spice and wood notes lingering.
