This is a Port Ellen single malt from Islay, distilled in 1980 and aged for 15 years. Gordon & MacPhail bottled it in 1996 as part of their Connoisseurs Choice range, in a 70cl bottle.
Port Ellen's smokiness is described as strongly maritime, with a sharp lemon note, light tar and an oily texture. Most of the distillery's bottlings were matured in refill casks, so a heavy oak influence is uncommon, which leaves the smoke more prominent and gives the whisky a somewhat austere character.
